War is the health of the state. – Randolph Bourne

Why do conservatives, who absolutely insist that they hate big government and believe in the sanctity of human life, have such an endless enthusiasm for war?

War is a big government program.

How so?

  1. It is ruinously expensive.
  2. It always brings restrictions on freedom.
  3. It is not pro-life.
  4. It is perpetuated by endless lies.
  5. It is full of unintended consequences.
  6. It centralizes executive authority.
  7. Those who support it are in total denial about its real world implications.

1. They have a bad government that never holds elections.

2. They have a bad government under which there are no rights for women.

3. They have a bad government under which there is no religious liberty for non-Muslims.

4. They have a bad government under which beheading is an accepted form of punishment.

5. They have a bad government which tolerates almost no dissent in the press or on the internet.

(That “bad government” thing sure got a lot of people on board when America was attacking Iraq and Afghanistan.)

6. Of the 19 9/11 hijackers, 15 were Saudis.

Well, who were the terrorists?

Just about anybody could be a terrorist, it turns out.

We Might as Well Face It, We’re Addicted to War

——————————————————————————–

Two weeks ago, I had never heard of South Ossetia and I could only tell you four things about Georgia.georgia republic

  1. It was a former Soviet republic.
  2. It was somewhere on the southern periphery of Russia, but I could not tell you exactly where.
  3. It was Joe Stalin’s home country.
  4. It was the Georgia the Beatles sang of in “Back in the USSR.”

Now, Bush, Cheney and McCain are foaming at the mouth over a purely regional conflict involving Georgia that has no bearing whatsoever on America.

RR in suburban Denver sent me a very lengthy article the other evening about the libertarian approach to all of this. While it appeared to contain many fine points, I just skimmed it as I did not have time to read it. My reply went something like this:

“RR,

“Thanks for sending.

“Two words: STAY OUT.

“Two more words: ARMED NEUTRALITY.

“Doug

I am over it. Over America’s endless involvement in every last conflict around the globe. Over our military presence in 130 countries. Over our belief that this superpower thing will last forever.

As Bob Strodtbeck wrote recently on EtherZone, “If great empires continued through perpetuity, then we would all be Babylonians.”

Somewhere in Mongolia.

Somewhere in Mongolia.

Empires always fall. 800 years ago, Mongolia was the mightiest empire on earth. And what is Mongolia now?

Oh sure, Americans think we are all that. However, as the Bible says:

Pride goeth before destruction, and an haughty spirit before a fall.” (Proverbs 16:18)

Jefferson once stated, “Indeed, I tremble for my country when I reflect that God is just; that His justice cannot sleep forever.” I profoundly believe that God is getting ready to slam America hard for its pride and arrogance.

Our Founders gave us the greatest system of government in the history of the world. One of the countless ways in which we have rejected it is our military adventurism. Indeed, our Constitution forbids so much as a standing army.

Consider these prophetic words from John Quincy Adams: “America goes not abroad, in search of monsters to destroy. She is the well-wisher to the freedom and independence of all. She is the champion and vindicator only of her own. She will commend the general cause by the countenance of her voice, and the benignant sympathy of her example. She well knows that by once enlisting under other banners than her own, were they even the banners of foreign independence, she would involve herself beyond the power of extrication, in all the wars of interest and intrigue, of individual avarice, envy, and ambition, which assume the colors and usurp the standard of freedom. The fundamental maxims of her policy would insensibly change from liberty to force…. She might become the dictatress of the world. She would be no longer the ruler of her own spirit…. America’s glory is not dominion, but liberty.”

When W took office in 2001, he promised that America would be a humble nation. After 9/11, we became the most arrogant nation on earth. You couldn’t go five minutes without hearing that 9/11 happened because America was wonderful and because the Muslim world sucked.

Lettre-de-marqueThe Founders gave us a tool with which to fight such things as piracy, terrorism and other such non-state crimes. It was called a Letter of Marque and Reprisal (LMR), which is a kind of warrant.

If, for instance, Uncle Sam has probable cause that – to paraphrase Chris Isaak – Osama did a bad, bad thing, let Congress issue a LMR to go after Osama. Perhaps you can send some Marines, SEALS and Rangers to take care of business. However, you do not need to start multiple wars over it.

War is a horrible thing. And our power elites just cannot seem to get enough of it. General Robert E. Lee once remarked that “It is well that war is so terrible, or else we might grow too fond of it.”

Most of the politicians, pundits and preachers who so recklessly agitate for war have never lifted a finger to serve one day in the military. However, they sure love to talk about war in theory. Perhaps if they actually made some personal sacrifices for the wars that they glorify, they might think differently.

You have to give Cindy Sheehan one thing: she made a sacrifice in the Iraq War. What have those who so roundly condemn her ever sacrificed? What has Glenn Beck, who called her a “tragedy slut”, ever given up? For some of these people, “sacrifice” means seeing a Ron Paul yard sign. I would love to see these people make a real sacrifice and see if they are still so slavishly devoted to the cause.

south ossetiaMy Microsoft Word spell checker is surprisingly comprehensive. I am quite impressed with the words it does not underline in red so as to remind me to check my spelling. One word that was lined in red when I sat down to write this was “Ossetia.” South Ossetia was that obscure.

Are you willing to die because of events in South Ossetia? Are you willing to send your kids to die because of events in South Ossetia? You can have whatever opinion you want. But if you are going to sit in your suburban easy chair endorsing every last war America is involved in, at some point you need to grab a glove and get in the game.

I am not a pacifist. If another nation comes here to fight a war, then, dadgummit, let Congress declare war and let’s get after it.

9/11, even if you buy the official story, was an attack, not a military invasion. It called for a limited response, such as an LMR. It in no way justified war on Afghanistan, war on Iraq and the proposed war on Iran.

A war on terrorism is a frivolous concept. Terrorists are horrible people who vent their grievances in very bad ways. However, they do not even control the government of Afghanistan. So the idea that World War III is necessary to stop terrorists from taking over America is absurd beyond words.

I am not afraid of radical Islam. America has no duty to destroy Islam. And terrorists are not going to “follow us over here” if we bring our troops home.

peace commerceBut what about our allies? The Founders warned repeatedly against alliances. They knew that alliances led to war and they wanted no part of Europe’s wars. Our alliance with Kuwait led us to endless war in Iraq. Our alliance with Israel has earned us enmity all over the Middle East. Our alliance with Georgia could very well lead us to a showdown with Russia. Is it worth it?

Again, let us remember the words of Thomas Jefferson: “Peace, commerce and honest friendship with all nations — entangling alliances with none.”

The purpose of the military is to defend the borders and the shores and be done with it. Currently, America has troops in 130 countries and our own borders resemble a screen door on a submarine.

coffinsI have never had kids, so I am not going to tell you how to raise yours. However, I would not encourage anyone to join the military nowadays. Our soldiers, sailors, airmen and marines are being used for purposes that have nothing to do with our borders and our freedoms. Do you want your kids to be meat on the hoof for all of this? Do you yourself want to do any of the heavy lifting?

If the only tool you have is a hammer, everything begins to look like a nail. America, it seems, cannot look at any situation anymore without calling for war. Yes, we live in a messy world where people hate us and sometimes do bad things. But not every slight is grounds for war.

To paraphrase Robert Palmer, we might as well face it, we’re addicted to war. This is an addiction we can not afford any longer.

I have a good friend, age 58, who had a recent health scare that prompted him to quit smoking cold turkey. I am happy to report that, despite temporary inconvenience, he is going to be okay. I pray that America gets over its war Jones so uneventfully.

Come home, America. And come home now.

One last thing.

One last thing.

Dear daughter, let Miley Cyrus be a lesson to you

Even though I have never raised children, this message is profound. Quit blaming Hollywood, Washington, etc. and start taking personal responsibility!

Site Admin's avatarRoadkill Goldfish

Dear daughter, let Miley Cyrus be a lesson to you.

Yes, this is what happens when you constantly hear everything you do is awesome. This is what happens when people fawn over your every Tweet and Instagram photo. This is what happens when no responsible adult has ever said the word “no,” made you change your clothes before leaving the house, or never spanked your butt for deliberate defiance.

If you ever even consider doing something like that, I promise you that I will run up and twerk so you will see how ridiculous twerking looks. I will duct tape your mouth shut so your tongue doesn’t hang out like an overheated hound dog. I will smack any male whom you decide to smash against his pelvis – after I first knock you on your butt for forgetting how a lady acts in public.

Why would I do that? Because…

Slate.com recently published a fascinating chart from 1931 that outlines the history of world empires. (Click on the narrow version of the map to make it much wider.) To make a very long story very short, they come and they go. Among the many lessons learned here is that Islam, let along “radical Islam” will not take over the world.

To be sure, Muslims enjoyed periods of dominance. However, if you examine the history from 700 to 1100, Islam as a political force died out. Look at the “green” area. Moreover, the Ottoman Empire – i.e. the blue field – had run its course by the start of the 20th century. Ultimately, it would be divided up after World War I.

Also, please take two minutes and watch this video. The entire history of the Middle East, like the rest of the world, is one of empires rising and falling. No one has ever maintained permanent control over this part of the world. There is a lesson here for the United States.

I once read that 1529 was the last time a Muslim country conquered a non-Muslim country. Don’t let the mainstream media manipulate you into thinking that Islam is going to take over the world. It is not!

How Do You Know You Are Doing Nothing Wrong?

Yale's law library.

Yale’s law library.

I wish I could remember my source, but I read a few years ago that there were two million federal, state and local laws on the books in America. Couple that with the ubiquitous surveillance state that is now part of our lives. How do you know that you are not breaking one of these laws? And since you are being watched constantly, how difficult would it be for some governmental entity at some level to successfully prosecute you and ruin your life?

Not very.

In his most recent weekly blog article, John Whitehead of the Rutherford Institute had this to say:

So if we already knew that the government was spying on us, what’s the big deal? And more to the point, as I often hear many Americans ask, if you’re not doing anything wrong, why should you care?

The big deal is simply this: once you allow the government to start breaking the law, no matter how seemingly justifiable the reason, you relinquish the contract between you and the government which establishes that the government works for and obeys you, the citizen—the employer—the master. And once the government starts operating outside the law, answerable to no one but itself, there’s no way to rein it back in, short of revolution.

As for those who are not worried about the government filming you when you drive, listening to your phone calls, using satellites to track your movements and drones to further spy on you, you’d better start worrying. At a time when the average American breaks at least three laws a day without knowing it thanks to the glut of laws being added to the books every year, there’s a pretty good chance that if the government chose to target you for breaking the law, they’d be able to come up with something without much effort.

Then again, for those who insist they’re not doing anything wrong, per se, perhaps they should be. Because if you’re not doing anything wrong, it just might mean that you’re not doing anything at all, which is how we got into this mess in the first place.

If You Won’t Speak Up about “Little Things”, Don’t Complain about Big Ones

“When they said ‘sit down’, I stood up.”
– Bruce Springsteen, Growing Up

Libertarians are often criticized for obsessing about “little things.” If this is true, our most basic freedoms are not that important.

parking ticketI read recently on Facebook about an Oregon woman who fought an $80 parking ticket in court. She was participating in a parade, and parking in the area was quite disrupted. There were no parking spots within a mile of where she needed to be that day. While she did not beat the rap altogether, she did prevail upon the judge to lower her fine from $80 to $30.

I commended her on this, saying “So many people moan and groan about Washington, but cannot be bothered to get off the couch and fight city hall.”

It is one thing to drone on and on around the water cooler or on Facebook about Obama. It is quite another to go nose to nose with the authorities in your own defense. While $80 may be small in the grand scheme of things, it is the kind of thing we can do something about.

all politics is localI don’t know if “all politics is local.” However, everything government does has local implications.  And if more people knew their rights, and exercised them whenever they were infringed upon, we would start making true progress toward restoring liberty in America.

(I have heard it said that if everyone demanded a jury trial whenever they got a traffic ticket, we would see a very rapid rollback of the police state. Unfortunately, this would require two things that are absolutely abhorrent to the majority of Americans: thinking and work.)

I pay little attention to the national media, and I recommend you do likewise. They love to promote certain narratives, and are downright contemptuous of anyone who would go against the grain. Conservatives are no different than liberals here.

coulter-attn-whoreIn 2012, shock jock media whore* Ann Coulter said this about libertarians and the drug war: “Look, this is why people think Libertarians are [female reproductive organs]. We’re living in a country that is 70% Socialist. The government takes 60% of your money. They’re taking care of your healthcare, of your pensions, they are telling you who you can hire, what the regulations can be and you wanna suck up to your little liberal friends and say ‘Oh, but we wanna legalize pot.’”

Mainstream conservatives talk a good game about liberty, but can’t seem to wrap their brains around the idea that if you would forbid someone from healing themselves with marijuana, you already believe that Uncle Sam should nanomanage healthcare.

If you think that marijuana is a “little thing”, read the story of Charlotte Figi of Colorado. Charlotte was born with an excruciating form of epilepsy known as Dravet’s Syndrome. For a good part of her young life, she was in an almost constant state of seizure. At one point, she was having 300 grand mal seizures per week. Enter cannabis oil. Now, Charlotte has two or three such seizures per month.

If you think that marijuana is a “little thing”, watch this video of a dying muscular dystrophy patient asking Mitt Romney if he should go to jail for ingesting marijuana, which just may be the only thing keeping him alive. And watch Vladimitt’s weapons-grade despicable response.

Likewise, watch Brian Wilson of New Jersey confront Governor Chris Christie about a state medical marijuana bill that could mean life or death for his two-year-old daughter who – like Charlotte Figi – has Dravet’s syndrome. To make a long story short, Christie has said he would consider signing a modified version of the bill.

brian wilson chris christieWhile it would be nice if to end the insane and godless drug war immediately, Brian Wilson had the right idea: confront a decision maker at the state level. He did so and won at least a partial victory.

Moreover, marijuana is not a “little thing” if your very survival depends on your ability to consume it. And if you do not stand up for your rights here, and acknowledge the rights of others, don’t complain about “big things” like Obamacare.

I also have a personal story of how local activism in the “little things” works.

church ghanaIn June 1997, I spoke to the city council in Aurora, Colorado in opposition to a proposal that permits no longer be granted to storefront churches. The council backed down, and today, there are storefront churches all over the city. (To be sure, the ultimate credit and glory for this victory belong to God.)

Did I petition the president or file an amicus brief before the Supreme Court? No.

Rather, while so many other people moaned and groaned about Bill Clinton, I got off the couch for a few hours to put some hurt on a local injustice. And while nothing changed nationally, I was able to affect a positive local outcome.

Jesus tells us that He that is faithful in that which is least is faithful also in much: and he that is unjust in the least is unjust also in much. (Luke 16:10) If you are not going to recognize and resist local tyranny – i.e. that you can actually do something about – don’t complain to me about the tyranny that emanates from Washington.

Environmentalists tell us to “Think globally and act locally.” You don’t have to subscribe to their agenda to be guided by this injunction. Washington is a lost cause and has been for many decades. However, you can still foster true change down at city hall and even in the state legislature.

fox newsThere are far more threats to your life, liberty, property and pursuit of happiness in the town where you live than there are in all foreign countries combined. Stop being manipulated by ABC, CBS, NBC, CNN, Fox, Rush Limbaugh and so much of the media that purports to be Christian. Look around the community where you live. Confront tyranny locally and when it affects your personal interests. You at least have some chance of influencing change.

And ignore those people who ridicule you for obsessing about “little things”. For it is just in these things that tyranny is actually played out. Little things are big things when they threaten your life and liberty. And if you can’t be bothered to speak up about these things, then don’t complain about the big things.

My 1997 Speech to the Aurora City Council about Storefront Churches

Thank you very much for coming out this evening. Thank you also to the Aurora City Council for making it so easy for common citizens to voice their grievances. Let us also be thankful that we in America have a constitutional GUARANTEE of the right to petition for redress of grievances.

My name is Douglas Newman. I have lived in Aurora for two and one-half years. I am here this evening on behalf of the Aurora Libertarians, as well as on behalf of my Christian brothers and sisters in Aurora.

I am here to express the indignation of both Christians and lovers of liberty (which includes the religious liberty of ALL people) at the proposal by some members of the council to no longer issue permits to storefront churches in certain parts of Aurora. This proposal was the subject of a front page story in The Denver Post on May 16.

How dare they intrude so recklessly upon our religious freedoms, which are GUARANTEED by the “FREE EXERCISE” clause of the First Amendment? How dare they intrude so recklessly upon the rights of landlords to rent to whomever they choose, GUARANTEED by the Fifth Amendment and that pesky old Ninth Amendment?

At least they are honest about their reason for wanting to limit storefront churches: Churches don’t generate sales tax revenue. For-profit enterprises DO generate this revenue. And people accuse corporations of being greedy! This proposal will do nothing less than steal crumbs from the mouths of the poor and the homeless.

church divine loveConsider what Rob Kimble, an elder at the Divine Love Christian Center at the corner of Dayton and Colfax told The Denver Post: “We are a spiritual place and God does work here. We’re at the very corner where people using drugs and alcohol come off the streets. The church is winning souls!”

Divine Love and numerous other churches in North Aurora embody the spirit of Jesus’ words in Matthew 11:28-30: “Come unto Me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For My yoke is easy and My burden is light.”

Contrast this with the words of Carol Singer of the planning commission: “There is enough building inventory that the churches could easily find another space. It doesn’t have to be a storefront.” This sounds a lot like Marie Antoinette. When the people of France had no bread, she just said, “Let them eat cake.”

It was Ms. Caldwell who in 1991 helped lead a fight to stop people from turning residential homes into small churches. Many of these congregations cannot afford traditional buildings. They simply do not have the financial resources. Where may these folks wind up if churches are verboten from renting storefronts in these neighborhoods?

The Divine Love Christian Center has already faced considerable harassment from the City of Aurora because it did not have — get this — enough parking places. Other churches have been pestered by the city for various and sundry building code violations. Complying with these regulations costs money which these churches in many cases DO NOT HAVE.

church cornerstoneDon’t get me wrong: the City of Aurora will let you have a church as long as it is architecturally sophisticated enough. This is like saying that you can have a retail store, as long as it resembles Neiman Marcus. Or you can have a hotel, as long as it resembles a Hilton. Or you can have a baseball field as long as it represents Coors Field.

I am reminded of Luke 11:46, when Jesus said to the Pharisees: “And you experts in the law, woe to you because you load people down with burdens they can hardly carry, and you yourselves will not lift one finger to help them.”

Ms. Caldwell, Ms. Singer and their ilk say that additional sales tax revenue is essential for revitalizing Aurora. How typical of the modern day Pharisees who hold public office in America. They love to congratulate themselves on how much they are doing to help us, even after the failure of over 30 years and trillions of dollars of government programs aimed at urban renewal.

If such programs could heal the ills that afflict America’s cities: we would by now have ended poverty, America’s children would be the best educated in the world, crime and drug use would be almost nonexistent, and the corner of Colfax and Dayton would resemble a street corner in the Denver Tech Center. Yet none of these things are so, and the more government does in any of these areas, the worse things get.

colfax cops homelessThis evening, we may not be able to repeal decades of counterproductive government programs. However, we can stand fast for the most positive institutions at work in North Aurora: the storefront churches. My brothers and sisters in Christ in these churches are working relentlessly and successfully to reach so many of the forgotten members of our society. The spiritual revitalization they offer by touching hearts and turning around lives is far more powerful than secular government could ever be.

Ms. Caldwell says she will receive much criticism for making this proposal. Well, let us not disappoint her. Let us resist with every fiber of our being this campaign against storefront churches. And let us drive a stake through the heart of this proposal to no longer grant permits to storefront churches.

On behalf of the Aurora Libertarians, and on behalf of the Christian community of Aurora, thank you and God bless you.
““““““““““““““““““““““““““““““““““““““““““““““““““““““
In the end, the proposal failed. Today, the sprawling city of Aurora has dozens of storefront churches. I don’t want any credit here, as all the credit and glory must go to God.
