George W. Bush and the Death of Christian Discernment

“Am I therefore become your enemy, because I tell you the truth?” – Galatians 4:16
It took 193 years – 1787-1980 – for the United States to run up $1 trillion in debt. And it took just four years of the first Bush presidency – 1989-1993 – to add an additional $1 trillion to the $3 trillion debt that Ronald Reagan had left us.
And it wasn’t just the debt. It was a broken “no new taxes” pledge, bigger government absolutely everywhere, unprovoked war, devastating trade sanctions on Iraq, a guilty-until-proven-innocent racial quota bill and gun-free schools. The first Bush presidency was a disaster by any objective measure. Even so, millions on the right were perfectly happy with Bush 41. Happy enough to nominate him to run for re-election in 1992.
And in 1999, millions were still sufficiently blinded by party labels to support HW’s son W when he announced that he would run for president in 2000. And when, during a debate in Iowa, W claimed that Jesus had “changed his heart”, millions of evangelical Christians went positively GONZO – that is a theological term – on his behalf.
Whether or not W is a Christian is, as always, between him and God. It is not my position to judge. However, the fact that so many who profess Christ followed him blindly is very disturbing. Jimmy Carter talked about Jesus far more than W ever did. Obama has stated that he is a Christian and the same people who were absolutely GONZO for W positively drip with hatred for Obama. The folks at Westboro Baptist Church claim they are Christians. So do these jerkazoids.
Simply saying you are a Christian does not make you one. Jesus warned us to “Beware of false prophets, which come to you in sheep’s clothing, but inwardly they are ravening wolves” – Matthew 7:15. A few verses later He tells us that “by their fruits ye shall know them”.
And just what were the fruits of W’s eight years in the White House? Unprovoked war, torture, spying, rogue police, guilt without trial, Medicare Part D, No Child Left Behind, tax-victim funding for Planned Parenthood and $5 trillion in new debt would be a decent start. If you liked W, you ought to love Obama.
“But he went after the terrorists.” The proper, constitutional, biblically defensible response to terrorism is a letter of marque and reprisal – i.e. a congressionally authorized warrant to pursue the specific perpetrators of things like 9/11. The mass murder of innocent Americans by Muslims does not justify the mass murder of innocent Muslims by Americans.
“But he quit drinking and he didn’t cheat on Laura.” Lots of guys get off the sauce and keep their zippers up. It doesn’t mean they should be president.
It didn’t matter what W did, because no matter what he did, millions considered it Christian. To paraphrase the Police tune, every little thing he did was Christian. But was it truly Christian? Not by any biblical measure.

And these same millions of people are oh so shocked that so many people could be deceived by Obama. Discernment died in America long before anyone ever heard of Obama. It is entirely fair to say that if there was ever a group of people who got exactly the government they deserved, it is these millions of Religious Right evangelicals getting Obama as their president. You reap what you sow. And if you heap endless praise on a perpetrator of immense evil, God is going to reward you with even more evil.
Constitutional attorney, author and educator KrisAnne Hall had this to say: “I believe that when we operate by FAITH, God is FAITHFUL to provide. When HIS people CONTINUE to vote the ‘lesser of two evils,’ God must assume we are satisfied with evil and lets us have it. You are proclaiming to God that His good choice is NOT electable in this country…and I weep for our children!”
W’s brother, former Florida governor Jeb, appears poised to seek the Republican nomination in 2016. And millions will support him for no other reason than that he is not a Democrat, and that his last name happens to be Bush.
He is a chicken hawk who has awarded Hillary Clinton with a medal of freedom, who supports Common Core, who made $2 million sitting on the board of a group that aggressively promoted Obamacare and who “want(s) to govern like LBJ“. But it won’t matter to these people.
Why don’t they just go ahead and nominate Jeb’s daughter Noelle in 2016? You know, the one that got 10 days in the hole for crack possession? I mean, like, her name is Bush and she is not a Democrat.
And even though the Drug War did not prevent his own daughter from possessing crack, Jeb remains, like his father and brother before him, a strident drug warrior. The Obama deception, just like the W deception before it, is part of a Much Larger Story which millions of those who profess Christ refuse to acknowledge the truth, but rather seek comfort in lies. How many of those who have been just so GOOGLY – another theological term – over either of the last two presidents will one day bow down and worship the “son of perdition” who is described in II Thessalonians 2:2-11?
Instead of obsessing about who will be the next president, Christians need to focus on getting out of Babylon – Revelation 18:4. How many will actually do this?

Voting for the “Lesser of Two Evils” Will Only Get You Evil
This …… THIS …… THIS!!!!!!
From KrisAnne Hall’s great article “God Bless America”.
“I believe that when we operate by FAITH, God is FAITHFUL to provide. When HIS people CONTINUE to vote the “lesser of two evils,” God must assume we are satisfied with evil and lets us have it. You are proclaiming to God that His good choice is NOT electable in this country…and I weep for our children!”
My thoughts on the “lesser of two evils” can be found here.

Radical Islam Doesn’t Scare Me
By Doug Newman – email me.

“For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind.” ~ II Timothy 1:7
While this past week’s killings at Charlie Hebdo in Paris as well as the related atrocities are horrific crimes, they need to be treated as nothing more. Let us mourn the dead and pray for all affected. Let us punish the perpetrators severely. But let us not read too much into these events.
Radical Islam doesn’t scare me. It is not going to take over the world. It can’t possibly do so.
Islam is not a centralized religion. It has no pope or Vatican. Politically and militarily, it has no Berlin, Tokyo or Moscow.
And so what if Islam’s stated goal is world domination. I can state that my goal is to score the winning touchdown in the Super Bowl a few weeks from now. The chances of Islam dominating the world are about as great. Indeed, it has been several centuries since a Muslim country conquered a non-Muslim country.
The following 2-minute video cannot be watched often enough. The entire history of the Middle East and, for that matter, of the world, is one of empires rising and falling. Yes, the caliphate covered a lot of territory at one point. However, it is worth noting that Mongolia was also once the mightiest empire on earth, covering more real estate than the Soviet Union. Where is Mongolia now?
Have certain clusters of Muslims been responsible for violence in the non-Muslim world? Certainly. However, we in America can avoid this is we just adhere to our Constitution.
The Constitution gives us four tools for “dealing with” Islam. If things get violent, we have the Second Amendment. If Judge Smails on some circuit court somewhere makes a ruling based on Sharia law, let us impeach him pursuant to Article 6, Section 2.
The third tool are letters of Marque and Reprisal – see Article 1, Section 8. These are congressional warrants to pursue the perpetrators of crimes like 9/11. The 9/11 attacks, while unspeakably horrible, were not a military invasion and thus were not grounds for war. I wish the following thought were mine: If 19 Americans went overseas and committed some horrific crime, would that justify an open-ended war on America?
And if you are a Christian like I am, the strongest weapon we have is the First Amendment, which protects our right to preach the Gospel and carry out Christ’s Great Commission – Matthew 28:18-20. Christians are not supposed to fight like the world fights – II Corinthians 10:4. We are not supposed to be “jerks for Jesus”. Rather we are supposed to set such Godly examples that the non-Christian world, try as it may, cannot help but be impressed by the influence of Christ on our lives – I Peter 2:12.
Jesus’ ministry was not about changing societies top-down via the iron fist of the state. Instead, it was about changing individual lives through the Real Power of the Holy Spirit. Tragically, too many American Christians would like to turn the Prince of Peace into some sort of war god.

What goes around comes around. We reap what we sow. And as long as America insists on throwing its weight around militarily to the extent that it does, it follows, as night does day, that there will be a whole lot of people hating on us. Neocon ranting notwithstanding, France has done its fair share of intervening overseas as well. Can anyone say “blowback“?
Too many Americans think that America is some sort of “exceptional nation” and is thus not subject to the same rules as any other nation, and that we have some divine license to do whatever we want, whenever we want, wherever we want because, well, because we are America bygummit. America, **** yeah! There is a God and He is not going to smile on any country that aborts a million babies a year.
Your chances of dying in a terrorist attack are downright infinitesimal. I read recently that about 2 million Americans die of various causes each year. This means that in 2001, 1,997,000 Americans died from something other than terrorism. Read this and this and this for more information.

And, no: this is not because of the post-9/11 surveillance-police state. There is no federal program that would stop some whack job from walking into a grocery store or coffee shop or shopping mall, detonating a bomb and killing a whole lot of people. TSA does not protect you either. If you will give up some liberty to have more security, why not just give up all your liberty to have total security?
Do you want to live in such a society? No? Well neither do I.
Here in America, the overwhelming majority of criminals are not Muslim and a similar majority of Muslims are not criminals. In fact, if there is any demographic in America that is likely to visit violence on Americans it is unmarried men. Let’s “go after” them! Let’s deport the whole wretched lot of them!
Oh, wait. Let’s not. I am an unmarried man.
It is always easy to sit there and demand that your government “do something” as long as they do it to somebody else.
Presuming someone a terrorist or even a terrorist sympathizer just because they are Muslim is just as idiotic as presuming someone a racist because they are white. Click here and here for documented evidence that the majority of terrorists are not Muslims.
So don’t succumb to the media-induced paranoia about terrorism. Don’t be manipulated into becoming unhinged for no good reason whatsoever. On the other side of this is something far more dangerous than terrorism: an omnipotent state.
Late in the afternoon of September 11, 2001, I received an email whose subject line read: “They want you to panic.”
The first line of the body of the email read: “So don’t.”
Oh, that was prophetic.

If Jesus Were Alive in 2014
“The US is as shut down as she voluntarily does. Presumably to celebrate a radical. A man whose ideas are so revolutionary that if he were to preach in the streets today and stir crowds he’d be met with riot cops. More likely just spied on and dragged into lawsuits and demonized on FOX news. He wouldn’t be paying taxes to a bought out oligarchy that plays expensive war games with the lives of innocents, that’s for sure. Strange world. Sorry Jesus.” – Gabrielle Obre, Dececmber 24, 2014

If Eric Garner Lived in North Korea He Might Still Be Alive
Look what happens to these North Korean women who tell soldiers who are harassing them to put it where the sun doesn’t shine.

We Need Fewer Laws: Over-Criminalization Hurts the Innocent and Empowers Government
I wrote last week about the lunacy of a tax system that created the conditions that led to the death of Eric Garner in New York City.
But I wrote that column in the context of how high tax rates lead to tax avoidance and tax evasion. Let’s now zoom out and look at the bigger picture.
Using the Garner case as a springboard, George Will explains that we have too many laws.
Garner died at the dangerous intersection of something wise, known as “broken windows” policing, and something worse than foolish: decades of overcriminalization. …when more and more behaviors are criminalized, there are more and more occasions for police, who embody the state’s monopoly on legitimate violence, and who fully participate in humanity’s flaws, to make mistakes. Harvey Silverglate, a civil liberties attorney, titled his 2009 book “Three Felonies a Day” to indicate how easily we can fall…
