Cops’ Lives Matter, But No More Than Anyone Else’s

Killing a cop is a very serious matter. Killing anyone is a very serious matter.

Cops’ lives matter, but no more than anyone else’s. Indeed, all lives matter.

This is not the point here: federal, state and local authorities have seized upon the killing of a cop to justify putting the entire town of Fox Lake, Illinois on lockdown. Indeed, the FAA put a temporary flight restriction in place over the area. This is not the first time that this has happened. A good part of metro Boston was put on lockdown while authorities pursued the Boston Marathon bomber in 2013.

If certain crimes justify putting cities on lockdown, why don’t all crimes justify such lockdowns? I mean, like, they’ve got to get the bad guys! There are numerous manhunts every day in America, almost none of which involve such Gestapo-style measures.

The big issue here is how long will it take until enough people to WAKE UP and see the big picture of the metastasizing police state in America? Since 9/11, the American people, for the most part, have – in the name of “safety and security” – put their blessing on: putting entire cities on lockdown, warrantless searches and spying, the suspension of habeas corpus, sexual assault as a condition of travel, indefinite detention without any semblance of due process, severe restrictions on peaceful protest and surveillance drones in our skies watching our every move. And don’t dare think for a minute that we won’t accept predator drones in domestic law enforcement, as there are already precedents.

Police brutality is absolutely rampant in America. So far this year, 779 Americans have been killed by police. And only a small minority of people seem upset about this.

(Law enforcement is not even one of the 10 deadliest professions. And no, there is no overall increase in the killing of police – in face, the trend is downward.)

The current presidential race in the “conservative” party – you know, the one that believes in “more freedom” and “less government” – is just one big game of one-upmanship over who can institute the most oppressive police state.

The more tyranny we tolerate, the more we get. And if we continue to tolerate iron-fisted measures such as those being implemented in Fox Lake, Illinois, we deserve a president FAR WORSE than Obama.

Someone else said it first: God blessed America … and look what we did with it.

UPDATE: It turns out Gliniewicz’s death was a suicide.

About Food for the Thinkers

My name is Doug Newman. I live in Aurora, Colorado, just outside Denver. Food for the Thinkers is mostly about the connection between Christianity and libertarianism. Most Christians do not understand libertarianism. And most libertarians do not understand Christianity. Hopefully, this blog helps clear up those misunderstanding. Check out my old page at And remember: When you let people do whatever they want, you get Woodstock. But when you let governments do whatever they want, you get Auschwitz.

  1. Danny Crane says:

Deserve a President “worse than Obama”? Good Lord, man, that could only be THE antichrist. Obama is just AN antichrist. But it would be hard to imagine something worse than a guy who believes he is an emperor, a pharoah and a king all rolled into one and that is what we have in Obama.

  2. Regan Benson says:

The only thing that separates this current administration from others as it relates to this very real police state, is that this president is black and turned it into a race war. That’s it.
