“Believe not every spirit, but try the spirits whether they are of God: because many false prophets are gone out into the world.” – I John 4:1

Very little surprises me anymore. Hence, I cannot say I was surprised to learn that actor Jamie Foxx recently referred to Obama as “our lord and savior.”
Do all those who support Obama support deify him? Certainly not! However, Foxx’s remark is symptomatic of a disturbing trend in the way Americans view their president. Even if Obama is the first president to be viewed as godlike, it is merely a continuation of the totally unfounded adulation that so many on the right had for his predecessor GWBush.
During the 2000 election season, a reporter asked candidate Bush which philosopher influenced him most. He responded “Christ, because He changed my heart.”
Whether or not GWBush is a Christian is ultimately between him and God. However, for the next eight-plus years, we heard no end of what a great and godly man he was. Megachurch pastors and “Christian” media hacks who are more often pimps for the pachyderm* than anything else relentlessly extolled the virtues of This Great Christian President.
I never heard anyone attribute actual godhood to GWBush, but after all the Bible studies and church lunches I attended, it would not surprise me if someone somewhere did. GWBush said one thing about Jesus Christ one time and that is all it took for millions of biblically illiterate professing Christians to disengage their brains.
Jesus taught that we are to know people “by their fruits” – Matthew 7:20. The fruit on the Bush, if you will, included but was not limited to: aggressive war, torture, warrantless searches and spying, increasingly militarized police, and guilt without trial. His economic fruit consisted of outspending Kim Jong-Bill Clinton by $1 trillion per year and adding $5 trillion to the national debt. Socialism is not Christian – Exodus 20:15, 17; II Corinthians 9:7 – and GWBush was a raging socialist.
But none of this mattered to millions of googly-eyed church zombies who bent their knees before their Great Christian President. As Pastor Chuck Baldwin once so brilliantly put it, they wanted to add Bush to the Holy Trinity.
I have heard it said that the presidency is like a Fibonacci sequence in that presidents merely keep building on what their predecessors have done. Just as GWBush expanded on Clinton, Obama has expanded on GWBush. And the cult of personality that surrounds the presidency has grown accordingly. **
This is all part of what I call “the Great Ramp-Up to the anti-Christ.” Revelation 13:3 foretells of an all-powerful world ruler whom “all the world wondered after.”
I tremble when I consider the cult following that will surround whoever comes after Obama in the Oval Office. It will require serious spiritual preparation on the part of the true Christian remnant to withstand the onslaught of lies and deception.
I know that God ultimately rules the world and that He, not GWBush, is The Ultimate Decider of how nations are governed – Daniel 2:21; 4:17, Acts 17:26. I don’t know why He has allowed the Orwellian nightmare that is North Korea to go on for over 60 years. Perhaps it is to serve as a lesson of what awaits us if we place unlimited, unfounded trust in secular rulers. Those poor people in North Korea have no choice but to worship their Dear Leader – if they do not want to be sent to prison camps.
In America, it is another story. In the words of Malcolm Muggeridge: “People believe lies not because they have to, but because they want to.”
The disciples asked Jesus “what shall be the sign of thy coming, and of the end of the world?” Jesus answered “Take heed that no man deceive you” – Matthew 24:3-4.
And by that, He meant NO MAN!
Any questions?

* I read this phrase on a blog somewhere. Oh how I wish I had coined it myself.
** Ron Paul supporters were often branded as cultists. Reassuring proof that we are not cultists was the outrage that erupted when his son Rand, the senator from Kentucky, announced his support for Mitt Romney’s candidacy.
