US Police Kill More Every Few Days than Those in Other Countries Kill in Years

  1. We don’t have the world’s highest crime rate. We’re not even close.
  2. Violent crime rates have dropped substantially over the last few decades.
  3. On-the-job police fatalities are at some of the lowest levels in decades.
  4. Are the cops wrong all the time? NO! However, it is not just stupid, but it is also downright dangerous to assume that they are right all the time.
  5. Even so, this compilation of death-by-cop statistics ought to really rattle you.

Just Because the Cops Say Something Doesn’t Make It True

This isn’t about “he said she said”, but rather “cop said citizen said”.

On April 1, near the corner of Colfax and Sable in Aurora, Colorado – a 10-minute drive from where I live – police Sergeant Kevin Barnes shot motorist Michael Torres, seriously injuring him. Barnes will not face charges.

According to KDVR Channel 31 in Denver,

“Officers wanted to arrest Michael Torres, who they said was wanted for aggravated motor vehicle theft. Police said they believed he was armed and dangerous.

“When police tried to arrest Torres, he took off in his car and Sgt. Kevin Barnes fired his rifle three times, the district attorney’s office stated.”

Thus said the cops.

“A background check on Torres did not find anything indicating he was wanted for aggravated motor vehicle theft and his family insisted he was innocent of the alleged crimes.”

Hence, the cops had no reason to pursue Torres.

“The investigation demonstrated that Mr. Michael Torres was aware that the police were following him and made aggressive maneuvers with his vehicle to avoid apprehension,” the statement said.

“At the time Sergeant Barnes fired his weapon, he stated he was in fear for his life, the lives of his fellow officers and citizens.”

“The evidence does not support the filing of any criminal charges against Sergeant Barnes.”

Thus said the cops.

“Torres’ girlfriend, Stephanie Cervantes-Facio, was in the vehicle with him during the shooting. She said police rammed the back of the vehicle, sending it away from officers and into a ditch.”

“She said she looked over and saw Torres had been shot. She said there was no gun in the vehicle, prompting questions about the officer’s decision to fire.”

“It was terrifying. I have never felt so scared in my life. I thought I was going to die. I have never been around gun shots or that kind of police brutality,” Cervantes-Facio said.

So who’s right? The cops or their victims?

We know that a cop shot a man, seriously injuring him, and will not get as much as a slap on the wrist.

Everything else the cops have said here is an accusation. None of it has ever been tested in court.  Sergeant Barnes has never had to prove that he was in imminent danger like a non-cop would have to if he claimed self-defense. Michael Torres never got any due process.

In Dunlap’s case, he was given a death sentence. Why did the Aurora Police see the need to shoot Michael Torres on sight, with the potential of killing him?

Just because the cops said Michael Torres stole one vehicle and “made aggressive maneuvers” with another doesn’t make either accusation true.

Just because the cops said someone was a serial child molester doesn’t automatically make that person a serial child molester.

Just because the FBI or the DHS said someone was a terrorist doesn’t automatically make that person a terrorist.

Just because, for example, a business client or a former spouse said you did something horrible doesn’t automatically mean you did something horrible.

Just because the cops said something doesn’t make it true. It doesn’t make it false either. However, you cannot just shoot someone based merely on an accusation.

The presumption of innocence is sacred. If you are a Christian like me it is Literally Sacred. It is the Golden Rule – Matthew 7:12 – in its purest form. Have you ever been falsely accused? If so, my guess is that you didn’t enjoy it and you wanted the chance to defend yourself.

Do cops always lie? Certainly not! But do they always tell the truth? Again, certainly not!

dare cops donutsYou have to be brain dead to believe the cops – or, for that matter, any other group of people – always tell the truth. You have to be brain dead to believe that issuance of a blue uniform, a badge and a perpetually open tab at Dunkin’ Donuts elevates one to a higher moral plane upon which one is absolutely incapable of wrongdoing.

I can’t help thinking that some of these Facebook comments summarize the thinking of a significant percentage of Americans. Among them:

RG: “Let’s try something new. Listen to cops, don’t get shot.”

LL: “Here’s an idea….don’t commit crimes, and don’t run from the police!

LB: “I agree with all cops shootings until society stops thier War on the men in blue.”

Millions of Americans will automatically believe the cops because, well … because cops!

Cop. Him good. Him serve in community. Him keep me safe.

The cops’ word is good enough for them. The cops’ accusations are always true and anyone who happens to be in their way must be guilty … because cops! And anyone who questions cops hates cops and America and God and, well … everything good!

We just came through a 4-day orgy of fireworks, hot dogs, beer and baseball in which we purport to celebrate the anniversary of the signing of a document that reads in part: “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable rights, that among these are life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.”

When cops can shoot people with impunity, people are neither equal nor free.

You are far more likely to meet a police officer than anyone you voted for. These encounters represent the interface between the individual and the state. When you read about an officer-involved shooting, or any other example of police abuse, do you (a) automatically side with the cops or do you (b) start asking serious questions and demanding hard evidence of wrongdoing on the part of the victim? This, and not your party affiliation, determines your true political stance.

July 4 weekend has passed and life is somewhat back to normal. We are sitting in front of our computers and HELLevision sets moaning and groaning about all the tyrants and criminals in Washington and wondering how they ever got there. It’s not hard to figure out at all. When you excuse tyranny and criminality by your local government on the streets of your community, you DESERVE tyrants and criminals in your national government.

Donald Trump and the Death of Discernment

Donald Trump’s ascent to the White House is, every bit as much as that of his predecessor, evidence of the death of discernment in America.

Let’s forget, for a moment, all the gossip and noise and ask ourselves why is Trump so famous and why is he now the president?

Trump is famous for being famous. Have a look at the Forbes 400 list of American billionaires. Some are famous: Gates, Buffett, Zuckerberg, Jordan, Oprah. However, most are not. You may have heard of their companies – Google, Starbucks, Dish Network – but not of them personally. Sometimes you might know the name – Jeff Bezos, Phil Knight, Michael Dell – but not what they look like. The difference is that Trump has been in everybody’s face flaunting his wealth and trumpeting what he sees as his own wonderfulness since at least the early 1980s.

We have never seen an egomaniac nearly approaching Trump. He makes Muhammad Ali look like a Milquetoast. The Bible prophesies – Two Thessalonians 2:3-4 – of the “son of perdition; Who opposeth and exalteth himself above all that is called God, or that is worshipped.”

Trump’s spiritual status is, as always, between him and God. I imagine that Trump is some sort of deist, believing that there is a god, but that he has no duties toward that god. And even though Trump is not the “son of perdition”, he exalts himself endlessly unlike anyone else we have ever seen in our out of politics.

trump crack whore memeTrump’s supporters are in just as much denial as those of any other president about his personal past. This goes double for his Christian supporters. They KNEW he was an adulterer who bragged about his adultery; they KNEW that “grab her by the p____” was just one of dozens of examples of him talking about women like trash; they KNEW he owned a strip club; and they KNEW he saw no need to repent as he felt he had done nothing wrong.

His conservative supporters KNEW he had for his whole life been a supporter of biglier, fatter, uglier, costlier, YUUUUGER, instrusiver government. His anti-war supporters KNEW he supported perpetual war all over the planet.

And they still supported him.

And they give the lamest excuses.

“He’s a businessman.” So are George Soros, Michael Bloomberg, Ted Turner & Larry Flynt. So are all the Wall Street and Detroit executives who took all the bailout money. These people know as much about economics as does Bernie Sanders. Do you want any of them as dogcatcher, let alone president?

“He built things.” Quick! Tell me who quarterbacked the construction of the Freedom Tower in New York, the Willis Tower in Chicago or the Venetian in Las Vegas! You don’t know and I don’t know either because they haven’t been in our face 24/7 for decades.

 “He created jobs.” So do lots of people. Look at this list of America’s largest employers. How many of their CEOs can you name? If you’re like me, not very many. Starbucks creates LOTS of jobs and the right seethes with hatred for them.

“He speaks his mind.” So does your neighborhood wino.

“He’s not politically correct.” Neither is the Grand Dragon of the KKK.

“He gives a finger to the establishment.” So does Antifa.

trump troll bingo“If you’re against him you’re a liberal.” Being called a liberal by a Trump supporter is like being called a racist by an Obama supporter.

“God uses imperfect people.” Yeah, I know. He just let Obama stink up the White House for 8 years.

And finally, “He’s not Hillary.” Well neither are 320,000,000 other people. Is this the best you can do? “He’s not Hillary” is not a moral standard. Indeed, it constitutes a reckless disregard for morality in which anything and everything is acceptable because “he’s not Hillary”. If anything, it is a scare tactic.

In 1980, the big scare tactic was “anyone but Jimmy Carter”. In 2016 it was “anyone but Hillary”. Come 2020, the big scare tactic will be “anyone but ______” with ______ being someone worse than Hillary. All that will be necessary is for someone to be slightly less evil than ______ and that will be acceptable in the eyes of millions of “Christian conservatives”.

Obama Derangement Syndrome, and now Hillary Derangement Syndrome, have compelled millions to look the other way on all sorts of evil. You can’t vote for evil again and again and expect any sort of good result. You can’t vote for evil again and again and then complain about evil. You can’t ignore evil and have it magically become good.

And just being in denial does not make the truth go away. I won’t call Trump supporters “low information voters” as they endless amounts of information just a few keystrokes away. I will call them “high denial voters”. They simply don’t want to acknowledge the truth. They are not the only such people.

north korea trumpThe late British journalist Malcolm Muggeridge had this to say: “People believe lies not because they have to, but because they want to.” In North Korea, refusal to believe lies means imprisonment and/or death. In America, people don’t have to believe lies, but they want to. In fact, they are absolutely desperate to believe lies.

In 1943, before he wrote 1984, George Orwell wrote of a “nightmare world” wherein, if the Leader “says that two and two are five – well two and two are five.” Americans pride themselves on being independent thinkers while at the same time succumbing to herd mentalities. The controlled right is no different than the controlled left: If people in their political tribe say it, they will believe it, no matter how preposterous it might actually be.

truths liesAnd this is at a time when we have more information available to us than any other people in the history of the world! I guess it is just something in human nature that finds comfort in conformity. Lies are often comfortable and the truth is often uncomfortable.

While the chair-warmer in the White House, no matter who that person may be, is no doubt a problem, he is not the problem that truly plagues America. And the problem is not in the houses of Congress, the courthouses or the statehouses. The problem is in your house and my house.

The first three words of the Constitution are “We the People”. “Constitution” is not just defined as a political document outlining the duties of a government. It is also defined as the composition of something. As long as the great masses of people are so easily influenced by whatever sounds good, and as long as they seek security in parties and politicians, they will, whether they recognize it or not, be under the heel of tyrants.

I say this as someone who once could very much be described by the previous sentence. Then I started reading between the lines and doing some independent thinking. And in the spring of 1992, I walked off the plantation. When will you do likewise?

Yesterday was “Freedom Sunday” at the First Baptist Church in Dallas, Texas.  The pastor of First Baptist is Robert Jeffress.  He is a Trump supporter, Christian nationalist, and prominent court evangelical. As the pictures attached to this tweet indicate, it was a day of patriotic celebration in the church sanctuary.

People waved American flags during the service.

The last time I checked, the waving of the American flag was a sign of support or loyalty to the nation.  Jeffress had no problem allowing such an act to take place in a church sanctuary–the place where Christians worship God as a form of expressing their ultimate loyalty.  Patriotism is fine. Flag-waving is fine.  But I wonder if any…

A Practical Solution: Run Police Departments Like Fire Departments

“It hasn’t always been this way. The modern police department as we know it is a product of the 20th century. Prior to that, peace officers were generally dispatched in response to a complaint by the victim of a real crime, usually with a warrant. Contrary to legend, this did not lead to chaos, even in the inappropriately named “Wild West.”

“We don’t need police officers out patrolling the streets. Fire Departments have proven we can achieve emergency response in minutes without that. There is no reason police departments can’t operate the same way.”

You Are 47 Times More Likely to be Killed by a Cop than by an Islamic Terrorist

You are 47 times more likely to be killed by a cop than by an Islamic terrorist. This was the ratio in America as of June 7, 2017. Between January 1 and June 7 of this year, 11 Americans were killed by people classified here as Islamic terrorists whereas 520 were killed by cops.

These 11 people died in four one-man attacks. Out of perhaps 4 million Muslims in America, 4 have murdered in the name of Islam this year. Yet the entire nation is on edge about the threat of Islamic terrorism, while at the same time not putting 2 and 2 together about the much greater threat posed by law enforcement.

When cops properly apprehend violent criminals, I am the first guy to salute them. And when they direct traffic at sporting events and around accident scenes, I am the first guy to thank them.

However, just because some cops do good things doesn’t mean they should be supported unconditionally and never ever questioned. When they commit crimes, which happens far more frequently than many people are willing to admit, they need to be held personally and financially accountable just like any other criminals. Google “police brutality” or “police misconduct”. Enter the same terms into YouTube. The list of examples is endless.

And to dismiss the sources as “left-wing” totally evades the point. The true paradigm in politics is not left-right, liberal-conservative, Democrat-Republican, Hillary-Trump, etc. Rather, it is the state versus the individual.

William Norman Grigg, who left this earth WAY too soon, was the premier chronicler of police abuse in America. You can read his blog here. In 2009, Grigg formulated something called the “Tom Joad test” to determine one’s true political worldview. Tom Joad is the character from John Steinbeck’s novel The Grapes of Wrath who stated, “Wherever there’s a cop beatin’ up a guy, I’ll be there.”

Grigg spells out the Tom Joad test as follows:

“When you see a cop — or, more likely, several of them — beating up on a prone individual, do you instinctively sympathize with the assailant(s) or the victim?

“If it’s the former, you’re an authoritarian, irrespective of your partisan attachments or professed political philosophy.

“If it’s the latter, you’re an instinctive libertarian, whether or not you are consistently guided by that impulse in your political decisions.

“It may later be demonstrated that the figure on the receiving end of the beating had committed some horrible crime. However, such a disclosure wouldn’t invalidate the results of the Tom Joad Test, because that test reveals a subject’s default assumptions about the relationship between the individual and the state.

“Do you assume that the state is entitled to the benefit of the doubt whenever its agents inflict violence on somebody, or do you believe that the individual — any individual — is innocent of wrongdoing until his guilt has been proven?”

Did some of the 520 people killed by cops between January 1 and June 7 of this year pose an imminent danger to the cops? Most probably. Are cops always wrong? NO! 

Cops aren’t always right either. To blithely assume that these 520 people as well as the several thousand other victims of police misconduct and abuse “had to have done something to deserve it”, or to automatically take the word of the police and to go about your day, is to tell the world that you simply don’t understand the rights of individuals when they come nose-to-nose with the state.

The “47 times” statistic really ought to rattle your cage. And between May 1, 2013 and June 11, 2017, 4804 Americans were killed by cops. That is over 60 percent more people than perished in the 9/11 attacks. And this doesn’t even take into account the number of Americans killed by cops between September 11, 2001 and May 1, 2013!

Law-and-order conservatives may insist they hate the government when it comes to the IRS, Obamacare and the school system. However, they are quite willing to overlook the protections for the accused as enshrined in the Fourth through Eighth Amendments of the Bill of Rights. They are six-pack-ab constitutionalists except when they are more than happy to use the Constitution as toilet paper. They seethe with contempt for the government except when they are on their knees worshipping the government.

The cops are the government. And they are the most dangerous part of the government. They are the business end of the government. In any totalitarian regime, it is not the Hitlers, Stalins, Maos, Pol Pots or Kims who do the dirty work. But rather the cops, as well as the other armed, badged and uniformed gods of the law-and-order right: military personnel.

If Hillary had prevailed in the election of 2016 and, as many feared, America undergone widespread gun confiscation, it would not have been Hillary, or Chuck Schumer, or Dianne Feinstein on your doorstep demanding your guns. It would have been the police and the military. Would the law-and-order right still be kissing the derierres of those in uniform?

To be sure, cops have a risky job that puts them on the front lines against some of the true dregs of humanity. But people in numerous other professions have far riskier jobs. On-the-job police fatalities are at some of the lowest levels they have been in decades. And only about half of these fatalities were homicides. There is no “war on cops.”

To go from “they have a tough job” to unconditionally siding with the police absolutely every time is not just stupid, it is downright dangerous.

I started writing this essay on June 7. I finished writing it on June 11. Since then, 14 more people have been killed by police. The ratio is now over 48:1.


Update: As of September 25, 2017, the ratio is now 80:1, with 884 Americans being killed by cops and still only 11 killed by terrorists.
